The car we drive says a lot about us. Similarly, the performance of the car, especially its main component – the transmission, vastly depends on how you foster the transmission fluid.

Transmission fluid needs to be changed periodically to increase the lifespan of the transmission itself. The change interval depends from model to model and the way you handle your car.

If the GMC Sierra transmission fluid change is not done on time, you may face trouble shifting gears, getting the desired strength, and in the worst case scenario, you may get caught in the middle of traffic stalling with your engine!

Depending on the model of the vehicle you may need to change the transmission fluid every 3 to 8 years or after a certain amount of mileage the car travels. On average, you are expected to pay between $100 and $300 for a transmission fluid change on a GMC Sierra, including the cost of labor and spare materials.

However, this cost will vary from model to model, on your location, and the complexion of the transmission system your vehicle has.

When to Change Transmission Fluid Of The GMC Sierra?

When to change transmission fluid gmc sierra

As mentioned earlier, you may need to change the transmission fluid of the GMC Sierra on certain occasions. Practically speaking, I would recommend you to change the transmission fluid of your GMC Sierra whenever you experience problems related to the transmission system such as rough gear shifting, slipping gears, or the lack of strength in acceleration.

But there is also a general guideline recommended by the manufacturer which tells you about the change of the transmission fluid of the vehicle. If you follow the recommended guideline, you will be able to maintain the transmission health and avoid catastrophe. Check out the model number and the recommendation related to transmission fluid change.

The GMC Sierra comparatively takes more time than the Honda transmission fluid change interval. On average, a GMC Sierra runs about 45,000 – 60,000 miles without the necessity of fluid change, whereas a Honda takes about 30,000 – 60,000 miles

How Often Should You Change Transmission Fluid Of a GMC Sierra:

  1. The 2020 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change needs to be done soon after it exceeds 45000 miles under normal driving conditions. But if the vehicle is involved in heavy towing and rough usage, the fluid change could be due earlier.
  2. The 2019 GMC Sierra fluid change is usually due at 45000 miles, or in every 3 years.
  3. The 2018 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change interval is about the same 45000 miles.
  4. The 2014 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change is highly recommended at every 100,000 miles. Although this particular model has a higher interval rate, I would recommend you contact the local workshop to check if the fluid change is due at a rather earlier date.
  5. The older versions of the GMC Sierra tend to provide longer transmission fluid durability. If you are a gentle driver then the 2011 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change should be due at 100,000 miles
  6. The 2007 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change interval is recommended at 100,000 miles
  7. 60,000 miles is appropriate for a 2007 GMC Sierra transmission fluid change interval. I would also recommend you pay an inspection at 40,000 miles as different driving skills can lead to early wear.

GMC Sierra Transmission Fluid Check

GMC Sierra Transmission Fluid Check
Checking the transmission of your fluid GMC Sierra is a relatively easy task, which you can complete within a few minutes with a few resources.

Although routine maintenance is recommended at certain intervals, you can check the transmission fluid whenever you want. To check the transmission fluid level in your GMC Sierra follow the below-mentioned procedure-

  1. First thing first, make sure the engine is in action but the transmission is in “Park” mode. I would recommend you keep the engine running allowing the transmission fluid to warm up.
  2. Now it’s time to locate the fluid dipstick. Go to the back of the engine compartment, you will find a red handle type thing located on the passenger side. That’s it. It’s the dipstick we are looking for.
  3. Now the few resources that I mentioned above will come into action. Pull the dipstick out gently and wipe it clean with a paper towel.
  4. With the dipstick being neutralized by wiping, you need to put it back and pull it out again to get the actual reading.
  5. It should read between “Add” and “Full” marks in most of the GMC Sierra models.
  6. If it reads “Add” then you need to change the fluids.

Now with the dipstick reading saying “Add”, you may want to know the appropriate procedure to change the transmission fluid. Well, follow the instructions to make a hassle-free fluid change.

Things you will need for a transmission fluid change maneuver-

  • A large drain pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Hammer
  • Rubber mallet
  • Towel cloth
  • Recommended transmission fluid

GMC Sierra Transmission Fluid Change: Step By Step

  1. First, look for the transmission fluid pan located under the vehicle. It is a flat, rectangular-shaped metal piece firmly attached to the bottom of the transmission.
  2. It’s gonna be messy. Put the large drain pan under the transmission fluid pan to catch up the existing fluid.
  3. Now you need the socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the transmission fluid pan. If it’s too tight, you may need to use a hammer to loosen it up.
  4. Once the bolts are removed, hold the transmission fluid pan steadily to avoid spilling and let the old fluid drain out.
  5. Clean the pan using a towel cloth and replace the gasket if necessary.
  6. Inspect the transmission fluid filter, and replace it if it’s required.
  7. Once everything inside is clean, you are cleared to reinstall the blots according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. If possible, read the owner’s manual and refill the transmission with the recommended type of transmission fluid for your GMC Sierra
  9. Don’t fill to the fullest at once. Once you think it has reached an adequate level, keep it there and turn on the engine for a few minutes.
  10. Now, check the transmission fluid again using the dipstick and add more fluid if required. You are done!

Note: Some GMC Sierra models may require different techniques to change the transmission fluid. So, I would recommend you read the owner’s manual for your designated model or contact a qualified person for guidance.
